CHAPTER 7

At Maximus’s invitation, I stepped into the drawing-room, and it was then that I realized Talyssa was there, too. She was seated in an armchair toward the far right corner, her hands folded over her lap, her eyes cast down. As usual, she was trying to make herself small, less noticeable, as if by doing so Maximus would forget she existed.

She met my eyes, and a small smile spread over her lips. I nodded and walked to the opposite end of the room, toward the King. I didn’t want to be in her proximity. Her Trove scent was imprinted in my mind since the time Maximus had allowed me a taste of her blood, and I suspected it would always be. She seemed disappointed to see me walk away, then went back to staring at the floor, sadness falling over her features like a curtain.

“Nyro,” King Maximus said, standing next to a grand piano and one of the new young couples his poacher had brought. He put an arm out and patted my shoulder as I came near. “So good of you to come,” he said.

As if I’d had a choice. I forced a smile.

“I want you to meet Nelu and Nadia Stefanescu. They are brother and sister. Twins, as a matter of fact. Lord last Stefanescu is their father. Nelu and Nadia, this is Knight Stonehelm, one of my dearest Board members.”

His sister was slight and wore an elaborate gown with a tight bodice that forced her breasts up and out. Her hair was arranged in elaborate curls framing her face and making her look like some sort of porcelain doll.

Of their own accord, my gaze fell to her throat, to the tender skin next to her collarbone. Clenching my teeth, I tore my eyes away. A twisted, little smile graced Maximus’s lips, his expression seeming to say, do you want a taste?

I took a step back and hid my small retreat with a small bow. “The pleasure is all mine.”

Maximus chuckled. “If you’ll excuse me for a moment. I need a word with my Knight.”

“Sure, your Majesty,” they said in unison, walking away to join the other guests.

“How are things?” Maximus asked as soon as they were out of earshot. He lifted his eyebrows expectantly. There was no doubt about what things he was referring to.

“I... have continued trying to find ways to get back into the White Palace,” I said.

“And...”

“I haven’t been successful yet, but I’m sure—”

“That is unacceptable,” Maximus snapped.

“I know,” I said, realizing that making excuses wasn’t going to help me. “I will do better.”

“You do that,” he said in a firm voice that revealed his frustration, the first I had noticed.

Up until now, he had
